Ibarra(full nameSan Miguel de Ibarra) is a city in northernEcuadorand the capital of theImbabura Province. It lies at the foot of theImbabura Volcanoand on the left bank of theTahuandoriver. It is about 70 kilometres (43mi) northeast of Ecuador's capitalQuito. Today, Ibarra is amarkettown popular withtourists. It has mild weather, colonial white-washed houses (giving it the nickname The White City), and cobbled streets.The Santo Domingo church houses a museum holding paintings. The town is the seat of theRoman Catholic Diocese of Ibarra.
