Türkmenbaşy, formerly known asKrasnovodskandKyzyl-Su, is a city inBalkan ProvinceinTurkmenistan, on the Krasnovodsk Gulfof theCaspian Sea. It sits at an elevation of 27 metres (89 feet).The population (est 2004) was 86,800, mostly ethnicRussian,ArmeniansandAzeri. As the terminus of theTrans-Caspian Railway, it was an important transportation center.
